About the programme
- gives participants the skills and confidence to step into a middle leadership post
- ensures that they are aware of the accountability and moral imperative of the role
- equips them with a set of tools, including a Lesson Study, to make an impact on an area of teaching and learning in school
Sessions are delivered by an experienced Ambition School Leadership facilitator in a school, or by a member of your senior leadership team, who will receive content and facilitation training.
Our Aspiring Leadership Programme is available for both primary and secondary schools, and can be delivered to a team of teachers from one school or a cluster of schools.
If the programme is being delivered across a cluster of schools, the majority of teachers should come from schools that meet our school eligibility criteria.
In order for participants to get the most out of the programme, they should meet the following criteria:
- have completed at least one year of full-time teaching
- be a highly effective teacher who strives to achieve the best outcomes and progress for their pupils
- not hold a middle leadership position, nor hold line management responsibility for another teacher

How does our Aspiring Leadership Programme work?
The programme consists of four sessions which are spread over two terms, with dates and times set with participating schools:
Session 1: Stepping up to middle leadership
Session 2: Leading teaching and learning
Session 3: Managing teaching and learning
Session 4: Securing a middle leader position through effective communication
The programme can be delivered flexibly to suit the needs of your school or cluster. Four development sessions take place in your school or nominated lead school over the course of two terms. They are led by one of our facilitators, part of an experienced team of former school leaders, current Ofsted inspectors and trainers from the corporate sector. They will be assisted by either:
- an Ambition School Leadership middle leader already making a proven impact in their school; or
- a member of your own senior leadership team, who will receive training in facilitation and our session content and materials.
How will I know it has made an impact?
Impact tool: Lesson StudyBetween sessions participants also conduct inter-session assignments including a lesson study, using interventions, strategies, and lesson observations to practise the skills they are developing on the programme and to have a deeper impact on a chosen group of pupils.
